Navigating vehicle finance in South Africa can be confusing. Between prime lending rates, linked vs. fixed interest, and balloon payments, many buyers end up paying far more for their cars than they realize.
The Dreaded Balloon Payment (Residual Value)
A balloon payment is a lump sum owed at the very end of your finance term. Dealerships often use balloons to artificially lower your monthly installment. While this makes the car seem more affordable month-to-month, you will be liable for a massive chunk of money (e.g., 30% of the car's value) after 72 months. If you can, avoid balloon payments or keep them under 20%.
Fixed vs. Linked Interest Rates
- Linked Rate: Tied to the SARB repo rate. If the reserve bank drops interest rates, your monthly payment goes down. If they raise it, you pay more.
- Fixed Rate: You pay the exact same amount every month for the duration of the loan, regardless of economic changes. Fixed rates are usually offered at a slightly higher baseline than linked rates.
Deposits Make a Difference
Putting down a 10% or 20% deposit drastically reduces your monthly premiums and the total interest you'll pay the bank. It also helps you avoid being in "negative equity" (where you owe the bank more than the car is worth) during the first two years of ownership.
